by Sue Kelly
My name is Sue Kelly aka Miss Ru B Delicious from Ruby Event and Model Management… do you like apples? (I’ll explain that one shortly.)
So, the reason I introduced myself first with my “normal” name, is because that’s how I started. Ha ha!
It was 2016 (insert dream flashback music), I was nervously applying for the first Miss Pinup Ireland competition. In fact, a friend of mine, Miss Rhian T, was pushing me to enter with her.
The Pinup Style is so Feminine
I have always loved pinup, the style, the look and what it stood for. It’s so feminine and so strong. However, I live outside of Dublin. According to most, I lived in the sticks (countryside to those that don’t know!). I’m otherwise known as a “bogger”. Where I lived, the fashion was more modern and that was most definitely not me!!
I adored the pinup style. But the first time I went out fully dressed in pin up clothing was an experience! I felt I was being looked at as though I had 10 heads, 6 feet and a pimple or something on my face. People were giving me, ‘What is she wearing?’, looks and some were confused as they couldn’t see above my knee.
After this, I went back to my “normal” or half pinup style when going out and kept my naughty little pinup dressing secret to my bedroom dress up, ha ha!
No Pinup name
Then the Miss Pinup Ireland competition came around. Entries opened and I started to fill out the form. When the form asked for a name, I felt that I didn’t deserve a pin up name. I felt that I wasn’t good enough or pinup enough for one, so Sue Kelly it was.
What if, what if?
I told very few people about entering Miss Pinup Ireland, as I had to perform alone on stage. This scared the living daylights out of me. My Special Talent was painting live on stage. What if my painting turned out wrong? What if I fell, what if I embarrassed myself, what if, what if?!
On the day of the event no one came to support as I wouldn’t let them, I couldn’t! But in retrospect I wish that I would have let myself share the experience with my fabulous supporters.
I Didn’t Mess Up!
So, the day came along and we were getting ready in the dressing room. I was meeting some gorgeous people and having great laughs. Admittedly, the 3 glasses of wine prior to my performance did nothing, haha! I shook like I leaf and at one point I thought my legs were going to go, but they just about held up!
I did it! I didn’t fall, faint or mess my painting up. After my Special Talent I relaxed. The next 2 glasses of wine definitely helped.
Then came the Q&A. I noticed that some girls had written out questions and answers and seemed so prepared. I glanced at the questions once or twice but thought, as is usual, what comes out of my mouth just comes out. Even if I had prepped it would have been the same. Natural works better for me.
The Q&A was Fun
It was so much fun and I got a real giggle from chatting with the judges on stage.
So that was it, all of it was done and we waited for the winner to be announced.
At this stage my feet hurt, so when we were all invited back on stage I wore flats (rookie mistake). I thought I wouldn’t place so I figured there was no point in wearing heels. I’m ashamed to admit it, but my feet were really hurting bad.
I Couldn’t Believe IT!
The announcements started. They announced, ‘Runner up, Miss emerald Elle!’. There were cheers.
Then the 2nd Runner Up announcement, ‘Miss Rhian T!’. Lots more cheers.
‘And the winner is……Sue Kelly!’
My first words were, ‘F@*k off!!!’. I couldn’t believe it!
I was, shocked, overwhelmed, shocked, thrilled and did I mention shocked?
So,in my winners pics, that’s why I am in flats.
Fast forward to London in the Miss Pinup International Finals. Here again, shock, I was runner up!! I mean, how’d that happen?!!!
After all the amazingness, commotion and friendships (we’re actually family now, we have matching tattoos to prove it), in 2017 I got to judge. Plus, after all of that…(I’ll be here all night with those stories ha ha!).
Fast forward to today, da da ta daaa! Miss Ru B delicious was born, I earned her, I was her, I am her! Do you like apples?? How’d ya like them apples haha!
Ruby Event and Model Management
From there I’ve set up my own modelling agency, I have been a model for a number of years but took inspiration from my amazing pinup family to set up an agency that empowers both men and women. The rules are simple, no restrictions in height, shape, size, ethnicity, age… just like Miss Pinup…we all come in fabulous different packages.
It doesn’t matter what your height, shape or size is, once you’ve a passion for something you can achieve it.
I did it once with Miss Pinup Ireland, I’ve done it again with Ruby Event and Model Management (you can see where my inspiration came from there).
You Can Do IT
And if I can do it….so can you. Plus I bloody rock my pinup look on nights out now…stare they may but I’m finally true to me.
I owe my pinup journey and family so much and look forward to welcoming more members this year.
